In the midst of writing a 50k-word novel as part of NaNoWriMo 2015, I needed a break from the heavy subject that I was writing, so I joined a separate writing project launched by Mina V. Esguerra, #WriteBreakUpSongsAbout. The challenge was to select a One Direction song and write a 3,500 to 5,000-word story with seven chapters inspired by the song in around fifteen days.
I chose the song Love You Goodbye, because it was just what I was looking for. I wracked my brain and came up with Until . . . Whenever. I chose six countries, one for each of the first six chapters and dropped two people who would meet mostly by chance in those countries, feel a spark, spend the night together, only to repeatedly leave each other in the morning. Layne and Kate meet in Sydney, Australia, then in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam, then again in Beijing, China, all by chance. By the time they meet in Mumbai, India, it was because of a hint dropped by Kate. In Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, it was because of cryptic post by Layne. Singapore is the last foreign country they meet in and the seventh chapter reveals what happens in Manila.
I enjoyed writing this story because I was able to use my travel experiences and it was great seeing those places again through the eyes of my protagonists. There is a part two brewing already. Tentative title is Whenever is Now. Target to be written in 2016.
